"The Love Birds"
Produced at The Savoy Theatre.
Review from The Daily Mail (London) - 11th February, 1904.

From the-palmy days of Gilbert and Sullivan opera to last nighfs production of "The Love Birds " at the Savoy Theatre is a sad tailing off. Mr. George Grossmith's words are little above the level of a variety entertainment, and though Mr. Raymond Rose's music is both bright and pleasing, it cannot redeem the shortcomings of the play. The general spectacle is brilliant, and the dancing, and singing excellent, but no special song dwells in the memory.

The plot concerns a honeymoon couple living by the river, who have their bliss interrupted by an invasion - of theatrical girls. The wife runs away to London through a misunderstanding with her husband, and appears successively in the Turkish room of a society house and the ante-room of the Venus Theatre.

As the love-birds Mr. Bertram Waller and Miss Kate Cutler made a fine-looking couple, but it is a pity that Miss Cutler's good acting was thrown away upon such an ungrateful part. Mr. Fuller Golden, who received a warm welcome to the legitimate stage, did his best to be funny in a character wherein he had nothing to do but patter nonsense, and Miss Lottie Venne was her inimitable self as a lady who sees so little of her husband that she never recognises him.
