The Sopranos are Roimata Templeton, Lisa Bridge, Rhianydd Beaumont, Elizabeth Atkinson, Rebecca Moore, Helen Power, Katie Murray and Kathryn Pemberton - eight very talented singers from across the UK as well as one each hailing from America and New Zealand. Together, singing individually or in close harmony, they take us on a musical tour ranging from grand opera to rock/pop musicals.
The themed elements include:
Simon and Garfunkel - including Strawberry Fair, The Sound of Silence, Bridge over Troubled Water etc.
Judy Garland - The Trolley Song, Get Happy, Over the Rainbow etc.
Grand Operas - Flower Duet from Lakme, Carmen medley, Un Bel Di and the Humming chorus from Madame Butterly, Sempre Libera from La Traviata etc.
Bond Theme Tunes - Goldfinger, Diamonds are Forever etc.
Broadway Musicals - America and Somewhere from West Side Story, Selection from Evita, Flashdance etc.
Abba - Dancing Queen, Waterloo etc.
Classics - including Nessun Dorma
Both halves of the show open with the girls backing band, a female string quartet (3 violins and a cello) supported by drums, keyboard and electric guitar, getting us in the mood with some spirited orchestral music played with a pop edge - in the first half it is the overture from "The Marriage of Figaro" and Karl Jenkin's "Palladio" in the second. Then the girls come on stage and the musical tour begins. Each of the girls gets to lead the way with her own solo numbers, and whether it's the power ballad of "Diamonds are Forever" (sung by Roimata), the rock/pop of "Flashdance" (sung and danced by Rebecca) or the classical grandeur of "Sempre Libera" (sung as a duet by Helen and Elizabeth) every song is perfectly chosen to suit it's singers voice and personality. But the girls never sound better than when they are singing in unison - eight perfect voices in perfect harmony, the closest thing on earth to a choir of angels. Their group rendition of "Nessun Dorma" is the best I have ever heard and one of the highlights of an even full of highlights. If you enjoy the sound of female vocals it does not get better than this, making purchasing the CD a half-time necessity.
Eight top-class female vocalists covering a range of styles in an evening of superb musical entertainment.
