Madge Titheradge (1887-1961)

"BUTTERFLY ON THE WHEEL"
Drama by E.G. Hemmerde and Francis Neilson.
Produced at The Queen's Theatre, London.
Reveiwed in the Daily Mail [London, UK] -
It seems rather early to revive the play written by Messrs. Hemmerde and Neilson up to and round the cause celebre of "Admaston v. Admaston and Collingwood." But although so short a period has elapsed since "A Butterfly on the Wheel" was familiar at the Globe, there were plenty of people to give it the welcome of keen interest at the Queen's on Saturday night.
Mr. Leon Quartermaine, the new Collingwood, with his provincial experience in the part, gives to it everything but the typical Waller charm of lawless gallantry, while another newcomer who does extremely well is Mr. Evelyn Beerbohm as that amiably foolish fibber, Lord Ellerdine. This young comedian's sense of character is developing rapidly, and he manages to impart a touch of individuality even to the hackneyed humours of aristocratic fatuity.
In the great trial scene, which again strikes one as the best thing of its realistic kind ever done upon the stage, Mr. Stanley Turnbull as the cross-examining counsel misses the cruel incisiveness of Mr. Norman McKinnel, but is otherwise quite effective in his blusterous brow-beating, while his legal victim's torture is once more most pathetically illustrated by Miss Madge Titheradge. For Miss Titheradge's greatly improved performance, and, indeed, for the play generally, there was a reception so heartily appreciative that the breaking of a "Butterfly on the Wheel" seems likely to go on at the Queen's for some time to come.
